China’s weather could create a new opportunity for American agriculture.
But it also creates a reminder for growers: when demand increases, protecting every bushel becomes even more important.
China is currently dealing with a difficult combination of extreme heat and heavy rainfall across important agricultural regions. Since mid-July, weather has affected parts of the country’s corn, soybean and cotton production areas, raising concerns about crop quality and yields.
That matters far beyond China.
If domestic production falls short, China may need to turn more heavily to international suppliers, including the United States.
And that could put American crops in a stronger position heading into the months ahead.
China is one of the world's largest agricultural importers, particularly for commodities such as soybeans.
The country has also committed to purchasing at least $17 billion in U.S. agricultural products annually through 2028, excluding soybeans, according to the White House commitment cited by Reuters.
There are already signs that U.S. agricultural products are moving back into the Chinese market.
U.S. sorghum and cotton exports to China have increased, while soybean purchases have resumed under the broader trade agreement.
But the weather situation could add another reason for China to increase imports.
China doesn't necessarily have to experience a massive production collapse for this to matter.
Even reduced quality, localized crop damage or lower-than-expected yields can increase the need for imported commodities.
American farmers are already producing the crops the global market needs.
If international demand strengthens, those bushels can become more valuable.
Which brings us to a problem that happens every year across American farms:
Bird damage.
A farmer doesn't have to lose an entire field to birds for the damage to hurt.
Birds can concentrate around fields, feedlots, grain storage areas, livestock operations and other agricultural facilities where food and water are readily available.
During migration, large concentrations of birds can make the problem even more noticeable.
A field that looks productive from the road can still experience meaningful losses when birds repeatedly feed on the crop.
And the economics change when the market changes.
If demand is weak, losing a percentage of your crop is already frustrating.
If demand strengthens and commodity values rise, that same percentage represents more money left in the field.
The goal shouldn't simply be to grow more.
It should be to protect what you've already grown.
There is another reason agricultural operations shouldn't ignore bird pressure:
birds can also create biosecurity concerns.
Wild birds can carry and spread pathogens, and wild water birds are recognized hosts for numerous influenza A viruses. USDA and CDC continue to monitor highly pathogenic avian influenza in wild birds and agricultural settings.
CDC notes that people can be exposed to H5N1 through contact with infected animals or environments contaminated by infected animals, including feces and other contaminated materials.
That doesn't mean every bird on a farm is carrying a dangerous disease.
It means agricultural producers should take unnecessary bird activity around production areas seriously.
Birds feeding around grain.
Birds congregating around livestock.
Birds roosting around barns and structures.
Birds contaminating equipment, feed areas and high-traffic locations with droppings.
Those are not problems that should simply be accepted as part of farming.
The conversation around agriculture often focuses on increasing production.
Plant more acres.
Improve yields.
Increase efficiency.
Find new markets.
But there is another side of the equation:
protect the production you already have.
China's weather problems are a good example of how quickly agricultural supply and demand can change.
A weather event thousands of miles away can potentially influence global commodity flows.
A trade agreement can open another market.
A supply shortage can increase demand.
And suddenly, the crop sitting in an American field may be more important than it was a few months earlier.
That is exactly why bird pressure deserves attention.
You don't know what the market will look like at harvest.
You don't know what international demand will look like.
And you don't know whether a weather event somewhere else in the world will suddenly make your crop more valuable.
But you can control how seriously you protect your operation.
As global agricultural markets become more interconnected, protecting crops isn't just about maximizing yield.
It's about protecting the value of every acre.
Bird management should be part of that strategy.
Identify where birds are feeding.
Identify where they are roosting.
Watch for areas where grain is attracting large concentrations.
Pay attention to migration patterns.
And address bird pressure before it becomes a major loss.
Because if China, weather, trade or any other factor suddenly increases demand for American agricultural products, the last thing a producer should have to worry about is watching a portion of that valuable crop disappear to birds.
The market may create the opportunity.
Protecting the crop is how you capitalize on it.
China's current weather problems don't guarantee a surge in U.S. agricultural exports.
But they are another reminder that global agriculture can change quickly.
Heat, flooding, crop quality, trade agreements and international demand can all influence where agricultural commodities move next.
For American producers, that means one thing:
Don't wait until your crop becomes more valuable to start protecting it.
Protect it now.
Because when demand arrives, every bushel counts.
