The U.S. structural pest control industry continues to thrive, with total service revenue reaching $12.654 billion in 2024—marking a 7.9% increase from the $11.723 billion recorded in 2023. This growth is highlighted in the 25th edition of A Strategic Analysis of the U.S. Structural Pest Control Industry, published by Specialty Consultants.

Industry Resilience Despite Economic Challenges

Even with consumer confidence dipping and inflation running hotter than expected, the pest control industry remains strong. “While consumer confidence is sagging and inflation is a bit hotter than many anticipated, we remain bullish on the resilience of the pest control industry,” said Rich Kalik, partner at Specialty Products. Looking ahead to 2025, the industry is expected to grow by another 6%.

More than 17,000 pest control firms were in operation this past year, with two-thirds operating from a single location.

Cockroach, Carpenter Ant, and Bird Control Drive Revenue Growth

Once again, controlling cockroaches generated the highest service revenue, narrowly surpassing nuisance ant control. However, the biggest revenue spike came from carpenter ant control, which surged by 13.8% over the past year. Bed bug control revenue also climbed 5.9%, following a strong 10.6% increase the year before.

Another major growth area was bird control, which saw a dramatic 3.9% rise as businesses and municipalities sought effective solutions to manage nuisance bird populations. Increased urban development and stricter regulations on humane bird management contributed to higher demand for bird control services across commercial and industrial sectors.

Residential and Commercial Segments Expand

Pest control services reached over 13.25 million residential customers in 2024. Recurring revenue remained dominant, accounting for 85.2% of residential pest control revenue—though slightly down from 85.9% in 2023.

The commercial pest control market also saw strong growth, with service revenue increasing by 9.0% in 2024.

Record-Breaking Product Expenditures

On the supply side, spending on insecticides, rodenticides, and termite control products exceeded $1 billion for the first time—an 8.9% increase over the previous year. This equates to 8.2% of the industry’s total materials and supplies (M&S) spending.
