A tragic case of bird flu has been reported in Andhra Pradesh, where a two-year-old girl succumbed to the virus last month. Health officials have confirmed that she tested positive for bird flu, with raw chicken consumption suspected as the cause.

Confirmation of Bird Flu Case

Officials from the Pune-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirmed that the girl had contracted bird flu after testing her samples. The child passed away on March 16, and test results on March 24 verified the presence of the virus.

“The girl died of bird flu while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Mangalagiri,” said a health department official. Fortunately, none of her family members tested positive for the virus.

Raw Chicken Consumption Linked to Infection

On Monday, health officials visited the girl's home and confirmed that she had eaten a small piece of raw chicken on February 26, which may have led to the infection. Her family mentioned that she occasionally consumed raw chicken, with her last intake occurring shortly before she began showing symptoms.

Timeline of Symptoms and Treatment

The child developed fever and other symptoms on February 28 and was initially admitted to a local hospital. As her condition worsened, she was transferred to AIIMS-Mangalagiri on March 4, where she experienced acute fever, breathing difficulties, and diarrhea before succumbing to the illness.

The girl lived with her parents in Baliah Nagar, Narasaopet town, in Palnadu district. Her father works as a bank recovery agent, while her mother is a homemaker. Health officials tested all family members, and their results came back negative for bird flu.

No Other Bird Flu Cases Detected in the Region

Animal Husbandry Department Director Dr. T Damodar Naidu stated that no additional bird flu cases have been reported in Palnadu or neighboring districts. Authorities conducted extensive surveillance of poultry farms in the area and found no signs of infection among birds.

Dr. Naidu stressed the importance of proper food handling, advising the public to consume only well-cooked chicken and eggs, as the bird flu virus does not survive temperatures above 60-70 degrees Celsius.

Awaiting Further Updates from Health Ministry
