Flight from D.C. to London Diverts After Suspected Bird Strike
A routine international flight turned into an emergency detour Saturday evening after a suspected bird strike forced a transatlantic jet to change course and land safely in Boston.
🐦 What Happened?
British Airways Flight 216, which departed Washington Dulles International Airport en route to London Heathrow, was forced to make an emergency landing at Boston Logan International Airport around 7:30 PM ET.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Boeing 777's crew reported smoke (fumes) in the cabin and a possible bird strike shortly after takeoff.
🛬 Safe Landing, Immediate Response
Thankfully, the aircraft landed without incident. A Massachusetts Port Authority spokesperson confirmed that a bird had indeed been struck. No injuries were reported, and all passengers were safe.
British Airways issued a statement noting that the diversion was a precautionary measure and that engineers are currently inspecting the plane for damage.
📈 Bird Strikes Are Rising — Here’s Why
This event highlights a growing concern in aviation: bird strikes are becoming more common. According to the FAA, over 19,400 bird strikes were reported across 713 U.S. airports in 2023 alone.
What’s causing the increase?
These factors combine to increase the frequency — and risk — of bird-aircraft collisions.
🔍 FAA Investigation Underway
The FAA will investigate this latest incident as part of its ongoing wildlife strike mitigation efforts. Data from these reports helps develop new strategies and technologies to prevent future collisions and protect both passengers and wildlife.
